本書は、祖父泰治の著した剣術教書の全面改訂版という体裁を取りつつも、その書名が示す通り、前著居合術精義に引き続き日本古伝の剣術という体系立てられた武術の表す技の本質について解き明かそうと試みたものである。

本書によって、現代的感覚からは一見窮屈な形態の古伝の型の持つ意味が、少なくとも明らかになったと思う。その形態の必然性ゆえに高度な心身の働きが生まれるのである。
剣術教書で祖父は、奥三ツ太刀までを発表しているので、そのまま同じ内容を踏襲した。しかし、剣術教書では省略、割愛された手合をすべて順序通りに網羅しているので、手合数は大幅に増えている。そのため図も570余枚の多きに至った。その点、著者としては、見えないものを見るための大きな手がかりを提供し得たと思っている。いずれにせよ、今後、これから武術を学ぼうと志す方たちがこの三部作のうちのどれか一冊でも手にするならば、すべてに通ずる日本伝統の武術文化の心の素晴らしさを知るとともに、以後の修行に際しての教科書、或いは参考書として必ずや役立つであろうことを確信してやまない。
